HI...The Colleen Ballinger Story
I know for alot of us the first exposure of 'Colleengate' came in the form of what has been called the 'Worst Youtuber Apology Ever'
But before that there was a sequence of events that led to this bizzare 'apology'.
Ive done my best to piece together what we know so far about what is an ever growing iceberg of allegations, some of them seemingly with receipts. I then condensed them down into an easy to digest short form because if i put everything together in one post you might need to take the day off work to read it. And in the TikTok generation i have no confidence in attention spans to read through an exhaustive version of this. now with that understood lets take our thinking caps off and get into yet another example of toxic internet behavior.
So with no further ado I present.
HI...The Colleen Ballinger Story
Since we all are drawn to the weird ukulele video entitled 'HI' that Ballinger posted on youtube on what looks like Jun 28, 2023; ive decided to break it down into 2 chronological parts.
'pre ukulele' and 'post ukulele'.
this will help us understand how the heck we got here and where does it go from here.
so 'pre ukulele'
Colleen Ballinger was an arts graduate who came up with a character called 'miranda sings' that helped her gather a following for her odd sense of humor.
'miranda' was a combination of physical comedy, sketch comedy and stage performance all rolled into one.
On the surface you might look at a comedy act like that figure you can take it or leave it. and some of the comedy seemed to be witty and keeping up with the times, but that wasn't the problem though. almost from the beginning it was the age of her audience mixed with her choice of humor that would ultimately lead to the problems she is currently facing. As I looked at this case I dont know if I was the only one thinking 'it wouldnt have been that bad if she said that to an adult'. You could say this about alot of comics. Theres nothing that terrible about raunchy humor as long as its aimed towards adults, but when your audience is made up largely of fans that havent hit puberty yet things get a little bit complicated. Another thing that struck me was that she had plenty of chances to come to terms with this and she seemed to just kept going. 1 she clearly was not being held accountable for her behavior and 2 she was being rewarded hugely for it. 'miranda' helped make Ballinger what most of us want to be, rich and famous.
She became big on youtube before getting her own Netflix show 'haters back off' which blasted her into even bigger celebrity status. She was a guest on several shows including 'Comedians in Cars Getting Coffee'.
Now i think its a good time to get into the actual evidence that we have as to the 'comedy' that miranda sings was apparently aiming at her largely underage audience. To save time ive listed links to the items and you can make up your own mind what you think but remember, there were kids consuming this content!
- the books 'My Diarrhe' and 'Selp-Helf' for your convenience i linked some helpful reviews
- btw i just checked and both of these books are still on amazon! 😳
- videos from her live shows like 'the yoga challenge' along with first hand testimony
- colleen ballinger LITERALLY ADMITTING TO SENDING LINGERIE TO UNDERAGE FANS ON VIDEO!
- TONS of innapropriate messages allegedly sent to minors! even accusations of sending porn to an alleged minor, which if true could constitute a crime. here is an excellent article from EVIE that compiles alot of these.
Now lets get to what actually led to 'ukulelegate' at least according to what ive been able to gather.
Some of her now former fans including Adam mcintyre started posting videos in early June in an attempt to expose behavior that troubled them. This led to more and more scrutiny of her and its the pressure that must have led to the 'ukulele' video. I honestly think she was trying to say something in that video but she couldnt have chosen a worse way to deliver it.
now 'post ukulele'
If Colleen Ballinger was looking for the internet to hear her message she got it. It just wasnt the attention she was looking for. There was a flood of 'reactions' to her bizarre post, a flood that became a torrent. the reactions garnering millions of views and generating so much content itself that you could almost make a past time out of just watching all of it.
The infamous 'vanity fair article'.
According to In the Know H3 broke down what they thought was a 'puff piece' on Ballinger and all her allegations by pointing out the muddled nature of the article. The article seems to be a microcosm of the Ballinger story itself, a totally out of place messaging proceeding a terrible backlash.
Ballingers live shows have been canceled as well as a podcast that she had with Trisha Paytas.
And the story is continuing to develop. With everything that has come out about this case I cant help but think that there is more to come. Like we havent even seen all of the bad stuff yet.
But in any case I hope this wasnt too long for you I tried so hard to keep it short but there was just soooo much stuff to get through and I still left a ton out.
whew...
